Checker or rephraser?

Grammarly and QuillBot are often compared, but they solve different problems. Grammarly is a writing checker: it reads what you type and underlines spelling, grammar, clarity and tone issues, then suggests fixes. QuillBot is best known as a paraphraser: you paste a sentence or paragraph and it gives you a reworded version in the style you pick, such as Standard, Formal or Simple. QuillBot also includes a grammar checker, summariser and citation generator, and Grammarly can rewrite sentences on its paid plan, so there’s some overlap.

A word on study rules: paraphrasing someone else’s work with a tool and submitting it as your own can breach academic integrity rules, even if it passes a plagiarism check. Use these tools on your own writing, cite your sources, and check what your school or university allows.

Who each is best for

Grammarly: best for everyday checking

Grammarly suits anyone who writes a lot of emails, documents or posts and wants a second pair of eyes without changing how they work. Once installed, it works in the background and you accept or ignore its suggestions. The free plan covers spelling, grammar and tone detection, which is enough for most beginners. Read our Grammarly profile.

QuillBot: best for rewording and study tasks

QuillBot (opens in new tab) suits students and writers who get stuck on phrasing. Paste a clunky sentence and choose a mode to see alternatives, or summarise a long article to check you understood it. Its citation generator formats references in common styles such as APA and MLA. Always reread the result: rewording can quietly change your meaning. Read our QuillBot profile.
