Why these three?
ChatGPT (from OpenAI), Claude (from Anthropic) and Gemini (from Google) are the three general-purpose AI assistants most beginners hear about first. They all work the same basic way: you type or speak a request in plain English and get a written answer you can keep refining. You don’t need any technical knowledge to start, and all three run in a web browser and on iPhone and Android.
The differences are less about which one is “smartest” and more about feel, free-plan limits and the apps you already use. This guide focuses on what matters to a beginner: getting a useful result quickly, without paying for features you won’t use.

Who each is best for
ChatGPT: best all-rounder for beginners
ChatGPT is the most flexible place to start. In one conversation you can ask it to explain a confusing letter, plan a week of dinners, brainstorm a birthday speech and create a simple image. That breadth makes it a good “first AI tool” because you quickly learn which kinds of help you actually value. The free plan is generous for everyday text chat, and the low-cost Go plan exists if you hit limits, though OpenAI notes Go may include ads. Read our ChatGPT profile.
Claude: best for writing and documents
Claude tends to suit people whose main job for AI is words: drafting emails, tightening a report, summarising a long PDF or talking through an idea. Many people find its default writing style calmer and less “salesy”, which means less editing. The free plan is useful, but heavy sessions with long documents reach the usage limit sooner, and that’s the usual reason people upgrade to Pro. Read our Claude profile.
Gemini: best if you already use Google
If your email, calendar and files are already in Google, Gemini has a natural advantage. The paid Google AI plans bring Gemini into Gmail, Docs and other Google apps and bundle extra Google storage (Google AI Pro includes 5 TB). Even on the free plan, Gemini is a capable everyday assistant with image generation and research features. Check what’s available for your account and region, as features vary. Read our Gemini profile.
Pricing in plain English
All three let you start free with no credit card. You only need to pay if you keep running into limits or want a specific paid feature.

| Budget tier | Go: US$8/month | None | AI Plus: US$4.99/month |

Prices checked on 14 October 2026 from the official pricing pages (chatgpt.com/pricing, OpenAI Help Center, claude.com/pricing and gemini.google/subscriptions. Google’s page showed US pricing, and the Google AI Plus price may be introductory). Prices are shown in US dollars (USD) as listed, unless marked AUD. Australian prices, GST and app-store pricing can differ, and plans change often, so confirm the current price on the provider’s site before you pay.
Our suggestion: use the free plan of each for a week before you subscribe to anything. If you do upgrade, a single US$20-a-month plan (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Google AI Pro) is plenty for almost every beginner. The US$100+ tiers are built for people who use AI all day for work.

A simple way to choose
Open all three in separate tabs and give each the same non-sensitive task, for example: “Rewrite this email so it’s friendly, under 120 words and doesn’t add any new facts,” followed by your draft. Then compare three things: how accurate the result is, how much you had to fix, and which one felt easiest to use. Keep the one you’d happily come back to tomorrow.
Whichever you choose, follow the same safety habits: don’t paste passwords, medical records or confidential work information, and double-check facts, figures and dates before you rely on them. Our first prompt guide is a good next step. Still unsure? Try the free tool finder or compare other options on our comparison page.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for beginners: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
For most beginners, ChatGPT is the easiest all-round starting point. Claude is a great choice if you mainly write or work with documents, and Gemini suits people who already use Google apps. All three are easy to learn.
Can I use ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for free?
Yes. All three have a free plan that doesn’t need a credit card. Free plans have usage limits, so heavy users may eventually want a paid plan.
How much do ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro cost?
When we checked on 14 October 2026, ChatGPT Plus was US$20 a month, Claude Pro was US$20 a month (or US$17 a month billed annually) and Google AI Pro was US$19.99 a month in the US. Australian prices can differ, so check the official pricing page.
Do I need to pay for more than one AI assistant?
Usually not. Most beginners are well served by one free plan, or one paid plan if they hit limits regularly. Try the free versions first and only pay for the one you actually use.
Is it safe to put personal information into AI assistants?
Treat them like any online service. Avoid sharing passwords, financial details, health records or confidential work information, and review each provider’s privacy settings, including whether your chats can be used to improve their models.
