Ranked on published features, free-plan limits and beginner ease (checked 14 October 2026). We have not benchmarked these tools hands-on, and commissions don’t affect rankings.
A paraphrasing tool rewrites a sentence or paragraph in different words while trying to keep the meaning. Used well, it helps you find clearer wording, simplify jargon or change the tone. Used badly, it can change your meaning or disguise someone else’s work. Here are the tools we’d suggest, and how to use them honestly.

How to get started
Decide what you need: a quick reword, a tone change, or simpler language.
Paste one paragraph you wrote yourself into QuillBot’s free plan and try two modes.
Compare the result with your original line by line: did any fact, number or claim change?
Keep only the changes that are clearer and still sound like you, and cite any source ideas.
How we chose
We looked for tools that make rewriting easier for beginners, with a free plan good enough to judge. We used each provider’s official feature and pricing pages and our editorial judgement. We didn’t run a formal accuracy benchmark, so test each tool on your own writing before relying on it.
Why QuillBot is our top pick
QuillBot (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) is built for one job: rewording text. You paste a sentence or paragraph, pick a mode such as Standard, Formal or Simple, and it offers a rewrite you can tweak word by word. That focus makes it faster than a general chatbot for everyday rewording, and its summariser, grammar checker and citation generator sit in the same place. The free plan covers the core tools with shorter limits and fewer modes, which is enough to see whether it suits you. Premium was listed at AU$12.49 a month billed annually on QuillBot’s Australian page when we checked; other billing options are available, so confirm the price at checkout.
When a different tool is better
If you mainly want cleaner sentences in what you already write, Grammarly is less disruptive. It underlines issues as you type in your browser, Word, Google Docs and email, and you accept or ignore each suggestion. Full-sentence rewrites and tone changes need Pro. If you want to rewrite for a particular reader, a general assistant gives you more control: ask ChatGPT or Claude to “rewrite this for a customer who is upset, keep every fact, and stay under 120 words”. They can explain each change, which helps you learn. If you’re writing an academic paper, Jenni AI (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) works on your own draft and manages citations, so you’re less tempted to paraphrase sources without crediting them. See our Jenni AI vs QuillBot and Grammarly vs QuillBot comparisons for detail.
Paraphrasing honestly: what’s fine and what isn’t
Rewording your own writing to make it clearer is ordinary editing. Rewording someone else’s writing and presenting it as yours is plagiarism, whether a person or a tool does the rewording. A few rules keep you safe:
- Credit ideas, not just quotes. If an idea came from a source, cite it, even after paraphrasing.
- Follow your course or workplace rules. Many schools and universities have specific rules on AI and paraphrasing tools, and some require you to declare their use.
- Don’t try to “beat” plagiarism or AI checkers. It doesn’t make the work honest, and checkers are not the only way misconduct is found.
- Respect copyright. Rewording a whole article to republish it is still likely to infringe the original author’s rights.
Check for meaning drift
The biggest practical risk with any paraphraser is that the rewrite says something slightly different. Synonyms aren’t always equivalent: “may” becomes “will”, “some” becomes “many”, a technical term becomes a vaguer everyday word. Numbers, names, dates and legal or medical terms are the most likely to be damaged. Read the rewrite side by side with the original, and keep a short list of words that must not change, such as product names and defined terms. If you work in a regulated field, have a qualified person review anything important.
A simple workflow that works
Write your first draft without AI so the ideas and structure are yours. Then pick the two or three sentences that feel clumsy and run only those through QuillBot or Grammarly. If a whole section needs a different tone, ask ChatGPT or Claude to rewrite it with clear instructions, and tell it to keep every fact. Finally, read the whole piece aloud. If a sentence doesn’t sound like you, change it back. This keeps AI as an editor rather than an author.
Privacy
Anything you paste into an online tool is sent to that provider. Don’t paste confidential client details, health information or unpublished work you’re not allowed to share, and check each provider’s privacy settings and terms. Business plans often offer stronger data controls than free plans.
Free or paid?
Most people can manage on free plans: QuillBot’s free tier for short rewrites, Grammarly’s free proofreading and the free version of ChatGPT or Claude for occasional tone changes. Pay for QuillBot Premium if you rewrite every day and hit the limits, or for a general assistant if you also use it for drafting, research and summaries. Pay monthly first and cancel before renewal if you’re unsure.
Our verdict
For quick, controllable rewording, QuillBot is our top pick. Choose Grammarly to polish as you type, ChatGPT or Claude for tone and audience rewrites, and Jenni AI for academic drafts with references. Whatever you use, check the meaning and credit your sources. See also the best AI essay writing tools and Grammarly alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI paraphrasing tool?
For dedicated rewording, QuillBot is the best fit for most people because of its modes, free plan and add-ons. Grammarly suits polishing as you type, and ChatGPT or Claude suit tone and audience rewrites.
Is QuillBot free?
Yes. QuillBot has a free plan with shorter limits and fewer paraphrasing modes. Premium unlocks more modes and longer inputs.
How much is QuillBot Premium in Australia?
When we checked on 14 October 2026, QuillBot’s Australian page listed Premium at AU$12.49 a month billed annually. Other billing options were offered, so confirm the price at checkout.
Is using a paraphrasing tool plagiarism?
Rewording your own writing is normal editing. Paraphrasing someone else’s work without credit is plagiarism, even if a tool did the rewording. Follow your course or workplace rules and cite your sources.
Can a paraphraser change my meaning?
Yes. Synonyms can shift meaning, especially for numbers, technical terms and hedging words like “may”. Always compare the rewrite with your original.
Is ChatGPT better than QuillBot for paraphrasing?
ChatGPT is more flexible because you can describe the exact tone and audience. QuillBot is faster for quick sentence-level rewrites and works inside Word and Google Docs.
