The best free AI text-to-speech tools for students

Ranked on published features, free-plan limits and beginner ease (checked 14 October 2026). We have not benchmarked these tools hands-on, and commissions don’t affect rankings.

Listening to readings can help with focus, revision on the go and accessibility. You may not need a new app at all. Here are the free options, from built-in read-aloud to AI voices.

Quick answer: Start with the free read-aloud features already on your device (in your browser, Word or your phone’s accessibility settings); they’re enough for listening to readings. For natural AI voices, ElevenLabs has the most generous free plan (10,000 credits a month). Gemini Notebook can turn your own sources into a podcast-style audio overview, and Murf suits narrated presentations.

How we chose

We looked for free options that help students listen to readings or narrate work, using official product and pricing pages. We haven’t benchmarked voice quality ourselves; try a page of your own reading.

Start with what you already have

Most devices already include free read-aloud. Microsoft Edge and Word have Read Aloud, Google Docs works with screen readers and Chrome extensions, and iPhone and Android phones have spoken-content options in their accessibility settings. These are free, private and good enough for many students. If you have a disability or learning difference, talk to your institution’s accessibility or disability service: they may provide assistive software for free.

ElevenLabs: the most natural free voices

ElevenLabs (opens in new tab) is known for very natural-sounding voices, and its free plan includes 10,000 credits a month. Commercial use needs a paid plan (Starter was US$6 a month when we checked). Only clone your own voice, never someone else’s without clear permission.

Gemini Notebook: turn your notes into a revision podcast

Upload your own lecture notes or readings to Gemini Notebook and it can create an audio overview, a conversation-style summary of your sources. It’s a handy way to revise on the bus. It’s a summary, not a full reading, so check key details against your notes.

Murf: narrated slides

Murf (opens in new tab) is a voiceover studio aimed at presentations and videos, with many voices and languages including Australian English and add-ons for Canva and Google Slides. Its studio prices didn’t load for our check, so check current plans. ElevenLabs vs Murf is compared in our ElevenLabs vs Murf guide.

Other apps you may hear about

Dedicated reading apps such as Speechify (opens in new tab) focus on listening to documents and web pages. We haven’t reviewed them in detail yet; compare free limits with the built-in options above before paying.

Academic integrity first

Every school and university sets its own rules on AI, and they change often. Before using any tool for assessed work, read your course or unit AI policy, note what must be declared, and ask your teacher or lecturer if you’re unsure. Use AI to understand and organise, not to produce work you submit as your own. Australian students can also look at guidance from their institution and from TEQSA, the higher-education regulator.

Can I use an AI voice in an assignment?

If an assignment asks you to present, check whether an AI voice is allowed. Many courses expect your own voice for oral assessments. For accessibility needs, talk to your lecturer and disability service about approved adjustments.

Our verdict

Use your device’s built-in read-aloud first. Add ElevenLabs for natural free voices, Gemini Notebook for audio revision from your own notes, and Murf for narrated slides. See also the best free AI study tools for students.
