The best free AI voice generators
We may earn a commission from some links. It never changes our picks. How we make money
Ranked on published features, free-plan limits and beginner ease (checked 14 October 2026). We have not benchmarked these tools hands-on, and commissions don’t affect rankings.
AI voices have become very natural, and several tools let you try them free. The big catches are monthly limits and licences: free voices often can’t be used commercially. Here’s what each free plan really gives you.

How to get started
Write a short script and read it aloud once to fix awkward lines.
Paste it into ElevenLabs (free) and try 2–3 voices.
Adjust pacing with punctuation and short sentences, then download.
For anything you’ll publish commercially, check the licence and upgrade if needed.
How we chose
We compared free plans and licence terms on official pricing pages. Voice quality is subjective and we haven’t run a listening test, so try the same script in two tools.
ElevenLabs: natural voices, 10,000 free credits
ElevenLabs is known for very natural-sounding voices. The free plan gives 10,000 credits a month but has no commercial licence. Starter (US$6/month) adds one. Credits are shared across features and can run out quickly. Voice cloning is on paid plans and needs clear consent.
Murf: built for voiceovers on slides
Murf’s voiceover studio is designed for presentations and videos, with many voices and languages including Australian English, and add-ons for Canva and Google Slides. Studio plan prices weren’t shown to our checker, so check murf.ai. See ElevenLabs vs Murf.
Synthesia: voice and presenter together
Synthesia (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) turns a script into a video with an AI presenter in 140+ languages and voices. The free plan gives 10 minutes of video a month with a watermark. See how to use Synthesia.
Descript: edit your own voice
Descript lets you edit audio by deleting words from the transcript, removes filler words and improves voice quality with Studio Sound. The free plan includes 60 media minutes a month.
Consent and licences
Only clone a voice with the speaker’s clear permission. Check each tool’s commercial-use terms before publishing, selling or using a voice in ads.
Who this isn’t for
- Commercial projects on a free plan without a commercial licence.
- Impersonating real people: it can be unlawful and breaches these tools’ rules.
Our verdict
Start with ElevenLabs for the most natural free voice, Murf for slide voiceovers, Synthesia if you want a presenter on screen, and Descript to polish your own recordings. See also free AI text-to-speech for students.
