Everyday ways to use AI
Once you have tried an AI assistant, here are some everyday jobs where it can genuinely help. Each one has an example you can copy and change.
These examples work in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot. If you haven’t tried one yet, start with How to try ChatGPT safely.
1. Write an email or message
AI is good at turning a few rough notes into a polite, clear message. You stay in charge: read it, change anything that doesn’t sound like you, then send it yourself.
Try typing this
Write a short, friendly email to my neighbour. I want to thank her for collecting my mail while I was away and invite her for a cup of tea next week. Keep it under 80 words.

2. Plan meals and recipes
Tell it what’s in your fridge, how many people you’re cooking for, and anything you can’t eat.
Try typing this
Plan five easy dinners for two people. One of us is diabetic, so keep them low in sugar. Then give me one shopping list.
AI can make mistakes with health needs. Check special diets with your doctor or dietitian.
3. Understand a confusing letter
Letters from insurers, councils or utility companies can be full of jargon. You can ask AI to explain the wording in plain English.
Important: first remove your name, address, account numbers and any reference numbers. Only type in the confusing sentences.
Try typing this
Explain this paragraph from my insurance letter in plain English, as if to a friend. What, if anything, do I need to do? “[paste the confusing paragraph here]”
If the letter is about money, health or a legal matter, use the explanation to prepare your questions. Then call the organisation using the number on its official website, or ask a trusted adviser.
And if a letter, email or text asks you to pay urgently or click a link, check our guide on how to spot AI scams first.
4. Plan a trip
AI can turn a wish list into a draft plan. Tell it where you’re going, for how long, your pace and anything you need, such as fewer stairs or regular rests.
Try typing this
Plan a relaxed three-day trip to Hobart for two retirees. We prefer gentle walking, good food and no early starts. Suggest one rainy-day option for each day.
Always check opening hours, prices and transport on official websites. AI suggestions are not bookings. Our guide Plan a weekend with a little AI help has more tips.
5. Learn something new
Ask it to explain anything you’re curious about, at your own pace. Try “Explain how solar panels work, in simple words” or “Help me understand the rules of cricket, step by step”. You can always say “Simpler, please”.
6. Practise a hobby or a language
Ask for a short daily Italian lesson before a holiday, gardening tips for your climate, or ideas for a family history project. Keep the questions small and specific.
Three tips for better answers
- Give some background. Who it’s for, how long, what tone.
- Ask for changes. “Shorter”, “warmer” or “in bigger steps” all work.
- Check before you use it. Facts, names, dates and numbers especially.

Common questions
Which AI assistant is best for everyday jobs?
For everyday questions, the free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot are all good starting points. Pick one and get comfortable with it.
Is it safe to type in a letter I received?
Remove your name, address, account numbers and anything private first. Only type in the wording you don’t understand.
Can AI book my trip?
Treat AI suggestions as a draft. Book directly with the airline, hotel or tour provider using their official websites.
Can AI give medical advice?
It can explain terms and help you prepare questions, but it can be wrong. Always speak to your doctor or pharmacist about your health.
