Decide in 30 seconds
- Your Google plan includes “Take notes for me” → use Gemini first
- Meet recordings with clips, from a Chrome extension → tl;dv
- Searchable notes across Meet, Zoom and Teams → Fireflies

How to get started
Check whether “Take notes for me” appears at the top right of a Google Meet call on your account.
If it doesn’t, install the tl;dv Chrome extension or sign up for Fireflies with your Google account.
Choose which meetings it records (all, internal, external or only ones you pick) and tell attendees.
Review the first set of notes, fix any names or numbers, and only then share them.
How we chose
We picked tools that work smoothly with Google Meet and Google Calendar, have a free option to try, and are easy for beginners. We used official help centres and pricing pages, including Google Meet Help. This is editorial guidance, not a hands-on accuracy benchmark.
Start with what Google already gives you
Google Meet Help says “Take notes for me” requires an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan. When it’s available, you turn it on from Google Calendar, the Meet green room or the call itself. It captures notes in a Google Doc, offers a “Summary so far” if you join late, and emails the organiser a link after the meeting. Google says it supports one spoken language per meeting, in English and several other languages, and recommends it for meetings of 15 minutes or more. If you already have it, it’s the simplest option because there’s no bot to admit. Read Google’s official guide (opens in new tab) for the full requirements.
Why tl;dv is our top pick for Meet
tl;dv (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) started as a Google Meet recorder and it shows. With its Chrome extension, a tl;dv button sits next to the Meet controls, so you can start recording and admit the notetaker from the call. You can also auto-record calendar events and choose all, internal or external meetings. After the call you get the video, transcript and AI notes, and you can highlight moments and share clips. The free plan includes unlimited recordings with AI notes for 10 meetings, which is enough to try it properly. tl;dv lists prices in euros: Pro was €18 per seat a month billed annually, or €29 monthly. At the ECB reference rate for 13 October 2026 (1 EUR ≈ 1.60 AUD), €18 is roughly AU$29 before GST; your card rate will differ. Our how to use tl;dv tutorial covers setup.
Fireflies: best for searchable notes
Fireflies (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) joins Meet calls from your Google Calendar and focuses on written notes: transcripts, summaries, action items and search across all your meetings. If you have many recurring meetings and want to ask “when did we agree the budget?”, it’s the stronger choice. Its free plan transcribes with limited AI summaries; Pro was US$10 per seat a month billed annually. See Fireflies vs tl;dv.
Otter: best for reading along
Otter’s live transcript appears as people speak, which some people find easier than waiting for a summary. Its free plan includes 300 transcription minutes a month. See our tl;dv vs Otter comparison.
Personal Gmail or Workspace?
tl;dv’s help centre notes that accounts on public email domains such as @gmail.com can’t use the “internal meetings only” or “external meetings only” recording options, because there’s no company domain to compare. That isn’t a problem; just choose the meetings yourself. On a work or school Workspace account, your admin may control which add-ons and recording features are allowed, and may require participants to consent before notes or recording start.
Consent, privacy and accuracy
Whatever tool you choose, tell everyone when a note-taker is recording and get their consent. Recording and surveillance laws vary between Australian states and territories, and many workplaces, schools and clients have their own policies. Check where recordings and transcripts are stored, who can see them, how long they are kept, and whether the provider uses your data to train AI models. Every AI note-taker can mishear names, numbers, accents and acronyms, so have the meeting owner check the summary before it is shared or acted on. Don’t record confidential health, legal or HR conversations unless your organisation has approved the tool for that use.
Our verdict
Try Gemini’s “Take notes for me” first if your plan includes it. Otherwise, choose tl;dv for Meet recordings and clips, Fireflies for searchable notes across many meetings, and Otter for a live transcript. See also the best AI note-takers for Zoom and the best for Microsoft Teams.
