Two different jobs
Jenni AI (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) is a writing editor for academic work. You write in its document, it suggests the next sentence or two, and you accept, edit or ignore them. It can work with PDFs you upload and help you add citations in many styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago and Harvard. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant: you ask it questions in a chat, and it can explain concepts, suggest essay structures, give feedback on paragraphs you paste in and much more. The key difference is that Jenni keeps you writing in your document, while ChatGPT is a conversation partner alongside it.

Who each is best for
Jenni AI: best for writing the essay itself
If you have a topic, some sources and a blank page, Jenni helps you get words down while keeping you in control: you write, it suggests, you decide. The built-in citation help reduces the risk of forgetting where an idea came from. The free plan’s 10 autocompletes a day is enough to see how it feels, and Plus was US$12 a month. See our how to use Jenni AI tutorial.
ChatGPT: best for thinking and feedback
If you’re stuck understanding the question, ChatGPT can explain it in plain English, suggest angles and outline possible structures. Paste in your own paragraph and ask “what’s the weakest point in this argument?” and it gives fast feedback. It’s also useful well beyond essays, which matters if you’ll only pay for one tool.
The citation problem
General chatbots can produce references that look real but don’t exist, or that don’t say what the chatbot claims. Never copy a reference you haven’t opened and checked yourself. Jenni’s citation features are designed around sources you add, but you should still check every reference against the original. Your marker will.

Use AI honestly
Universities and schools have different rules on AI: some allow brainstorming but not drafting, some require you to declare any use, and some ban it for certain assessments. Check your course outline and ask your tutor if unsure. Keep your notes and drafts so you can show your process. Don’t try to disguise AI-written text; it doesn’t make the work honest. For rewording your own sentences, QuillBot (opens in new tab) (paid link: we may earn a commission) is another option; see Jenni AI vs QuillBot.
